Biography Entry: Jamie Thompson

My name is Jamie Thompson. I am a 77 year old widow serving a 5 year sentence at Bryan FPC. My conviction is for a “white collar” crime involving oil and gas interests. I have never had any crimes in the past and, although I believe problems with COVID and the price of oil and gas dropping to Negative were contributing factors to my offense, I knowingly pled guilty to two counts of wire fraud. I do not want to appear to be whining or complaining…I know my actions were wrong and I am determined to get thru this with some semblance of grace and dignity and will make a real effort to repay any victims who were wronged thru future restitution.

My background is a combination of geology/petroleum engineering with an emphasis on the application of computer science and geostatistics to the exploration for oil and gas–particularly in the Permian Basin of West Texas and Southeast New Mexico. I have had special studies at the University of Texas of the Permian Basin; Executive Business training from Harvard University School of Business and undergraduate studies in Computer Science at UTPB in Odessa, Texas. When I first entered the specialized world combining computers and oil and gas; my background was similar to the women in the movie Hidden Figures…I was a woman in a man’s world, programmed computers in Fortran, and was excited to combine the computer programs with maps, charts, etc. produced by machines like plotters attached externally to the computer systems.

My work experience is working for Mobil Oil Corporation in computer exploration. I was responsible as Mobil’s liaison to the original PBWDS (Permian Basin Well Data System), a consortium of well data by major oil industry representatives. I then started my own company called Exploration Graphics, Inc. As President and CEO, I was responsible for bringing the application of computers used in the oil industry from majors to smaller, independent companies. I later formed a company called Graphic Interpretations, Inc. where I was responsible for the applications developed during my years in the oil business to government (ie. Census Bureau “Google” files) during a major oil industry downturn where I employed geologists, geophysicists, and engineers. I then formed a company called Magnum Oil and Gas where, as President and CEO, I was responsible for the discovery of several oilfields located thru computer analysis of modeling and hindsight analysis which is basically the forerunner of AI in exploration in the oil industry.

During my career, I received many awards and accomplishments. Two of the most significant were having my business named Most Innovative Business in Texas (a nationwide SBA Award); and receiving the honor of being named One of the Top Ten Business Women in Texas (featured in Texas Monthly magazine).

I hope this is the information you need to assist me in building my profile. When I read my accomplishments, I am terribly embarrassed to be serving time. I am surrounded, however, with caring young women as other inmates, guards and staff who treat me with the greatest respect, and medical staff who take any problems seriously and address them swiftly. For those reasons, I tell the Chaplain here that I am truly blessed. I know God has a purpose for me here and I hope I can decipher what it is he wants me to accomplish.
