Journal Entry

This morning, I was surprised to find an email from PPT, sent through on behalf of Michael Santos, commending on my dedication to have postings on a very regular basis, sharing my views, experiences and giving virtual support to all who need it or just to “curious cats”.

For as long as I can remember, I have always reached out to people and I have often wondered why I have all this love and compassion inside of me.

Growing up, I was nicknamed “Sunshine”, for my family always loved my sunny and positive demeanour. Life has given me some nasty blows, my sunshine was not always as bright, but after every knockdown, I would lift myself up and polish myself to try to shine even more brightly.

This week has been very challenging.

I am a Suicide Watch companion as well at FCI Aliceville. I had been doing this at FDC Miami too. Why? I find so much satisfaction in giving back. In prison, there is an abundance of things that we can do. Hence, the Peer Success Team, that I have been proud co-founder of, together with Celeste Blair.

Coming back to the watch I did last night. One of the hardest things we have to face as human beings, females, is facing someone else’s crises and not being able to do much more than just being there for someone, pray with and for them and give them that compassion and support.

Over the past years doing this, I have witnessed some very deep crises and sometimes all we can do from our side of the observation window, is read a spiritual text, just say “I care for you”, do breathing exercises and pray.

You all know that my faith is very deep, so praying for the people I watch is a normal routine. I see them calm down visibly. I always tell them who I am, that I care, that they have to do their part to try to stay calm, communicate their feelings, try to eat and get the help from Psychology.

Life is life, with all its hurdles, with so many around us deviating from the real goal of life, which is peaceful co-existence for a pre-defined period of time. We need more caring for each other in the world, our societies show so many defects, which are in dire need of repair. How? By starting to repair ourselves, doing what is right at all times, exude that bright light and keep on shining. After all, people need people.

Thank you PPT for your much appreciated vote of confidence!
