I’ve recently started reading and using a GED book to refresh my memory. For the past week I’ve been studying math. I got my GED back in 2008 and I really haven’t done much since. I did enroll in college a year before my arrest but I ended up here instead of with a degree. I want to enroll in a correspondence course but right now Aliceville isn’t set up for us to use Pell Grants for college. I have intentions of finishing my bachelor’s degree before I get out. To prepare for the day when I can get enrolled I am going over this GED book. I didn’t realize how much I’ve forgotten, not just in math but the other subjects as well. Sitting in prison and not using my brain for educational purposes has really slowed me down. I do take opportunities to participate in the classes that are provided here to prepare for release. I know that I can do more though and I want to. I’ve been maintaining a regular exercise routine to keep physically healthy. Our recreation department is currently closed but until it closed I was jogging a mile a day and doing other strength training exercises as well. Now that I’m confined to the unit I workout in my cell in the mornings and I go up and down the stairs for about 15-20 minutes for some cardio. I have two women in this unit that I help with their exercise routines and their diets. They see me workout and frequently come by for tips and to see what else they can do for their diets. Its nice to help others since I know from experience what it is like to try to eat healthy and lose weight in this environment.
