I am grateful for a new day, for new grace and new mercy. Lately, I have been battling with the staff in terms of the FCI Milan music department. Because I am over the entire music department for the compound, there are challenges that seem impossible to overcome. This month is Black History Month and we are not allowed to host an event in celebration of the culture for several reasons. First, due to Congress not appointing a house of representative and approving a budget for the new fiscal year. Because of this, we are unable to purchase much needed equipment for the new season. Secondly, we celebrated MLK day with an itinerary for the entire prison and ran into numerous complications with individuals who wanted to sabotage the event. Unfortunately, staff are unwilling or hesitant to allow another event to be held.
In spite of the kickback from administration, they know that I will be an advocate for anyone that strives to present anything of value to the people. I am here to serve the prison community with my musical expertise during this time of my life. I am thankful for the learning experience that it provides me. When I return home, I will have thorough knowledge on how to promote events for my non profit organizations. Currently there is a stage crew, sound engineers, drum techs and other orderlies that help with hospitality. This team consist of about 25 individuals with the same goal in mind, which is to host a wonderful event that everyone can enjoy. I oversee 9 different bands that perform live shows every quarter, followed by a rap show event that individuals from all backgrounds enjoy. I will continue to learn and persevere through challenges because I know that this is what I need to get to the next level upon my return.
