Yesterday, I received my very own velour bag of Tefillin from a well known Jewish organization of which I applied for here at the Camp in Otisville. This was a very big step for me.
From day one since I arrived, I have been putting on Tefillin from inside my Cube/Bunk area with the help of a good friend. This person has been putting it on for me and explaining the significance of this very religious act while I do the blessings.
I can emphatically say that the supportive Jewish community combined with my own open mind and willingness to learn more about my Jewish faith has brought me a closer connection with G-d than I have ever had before.
Deciding to be designated to Otisville was a conscious decision knowing it had a 33% Jewish population and serves Kosher food. I wanted to be surrounded by my Jewish community and was open to connecting more to my faith. Little did I know I would put on Tefillin for 60 straight days, attend Shabbat services on Friday and Saturday for 8 consecutive weeks, and attend Judaic classes. Applying for my own Tefillin was a step I am very proud of.
I will continue to find my own path with Emuna and Bitachon in Hashem (Faith and Trust).
