What changes in America’s prison system would you like to implement?

I have experienced the American prison system because I am currently a Federal Adult In Custody. (AIC) While incarcerated, I have made many observations of how the prison systems are failing as a whole. The prison systems were set up for punishment and for inmates just to do time. But, as the system grows, America is realizing the old system is not working. As in no rehabilitation, the misuse of funding, corrupt staff, shortage of staff, unqualified staff, and not honoring programs such as First Step Act (FSA), Second Chance Act (SCA). There are many implements I would add to the prison system if given a chance.

First , I would start with the FSA. I think the FSA time credits should automatically be calculated into a person’s sentence within the first year. The FSA time credits are suppose to lower the percentage of time an AIC was inside the prison. It is also an incentive for an AIC to participate in programs.
This brings me to my second recommended implement programs. Programs help AIC’s build their selves for a more successful future. With self-help , education, spiritual, recreational. and re-entry growth.
This would benefit the AIC population as well as the public.

I think the American prison system should bring parole back. The prisons are terribly over-populated and many live in horrible conditions. AIC’s would be motivated to do more rehabilitation training if they were seeking approval from a parole panel.

Lastly, BOP staff should be better educated for their positions, other than just safety training. There should be drug tests, and more security measures when officers arrive and leave the facility.
In conclusion, I feel if we could implement half of these changes into the American prison systems, not only would AICs benefit, but our tax payers and families as well. I also believe more AIC’s would be more driven to prepare for re-entry.
