Journal Entry

How am I serving my community?

It’s been 140 days since I’ve self-surrendered to the women’s Federal Prison Camp in Phoenix, Arizona. So roughly four and a half months. After one month I got a job in the education department teaching English as a second language (ESL) and teaching GED classes to Spanish speaking inmates. Spanish is not my first language but growing up on the East Side of San Jose you must adapt and I took every elective possible in high school and even took classes in college. After three months working with the ESL students, I was asked to take over the GED math classes since the inmate instructor was being released.

In addition, to working in the teaching arena I also regularly attend two hour bible study session with the “Rescued not Arrested” church organization taught by a sweet little old lady called Miss Rita. In there we collaborate about our feelings and interpretation about the passages we read in the bible. In both areas I try to participate to help bring light and positivity in an area filled with darkness.
