JIn preparation for the 250th anniversary of the United States, there was an article on page A13 of the July 3rd issue of the Wall Street Journal entitled “What Made America Great.” It was mentioning a 6-part, 12-hour documentary called “The American Revolution” that covered the brutality of the American Revolution, which I intend to see when I get out. I outlined the key points about the documentary below:
1) Warriors were often teenagers.
2) The violence was deeply personal. One Vermont loyalist killed his best friend in hand-to-hand combat at the Battle of Bennington in 1777.
3) One of every three deaths was from a bayonet.
4) Per capita deaths were greater in the Revolution than in the Civil War.
It is important to remember that we need to keep in mind how important we have to guard the individual freedoms given to us by our ancestors who fought in the Revolutionary War. And, on a personal note, I will regain my freedom in 2026 – 250 years after the thirteen colonies banded together to create & sign the Declaration of Independence. Just as it wasn’t easy for them, being in prison was not easy for me (but on an entirely different scale) and I had to make sacrifices for the punishment associated with my crime. Time away from my family in prison, programming in prison to earn FSA credits, reading & taking classes to better myself and abiding by & attaining the goals I set for myself while I was here. I look forward to the time when I will be free.
