I woke up at my usual 7 a.m. and headed to the gym for chest day. I hit 215 pounds on the barbell bench press for 6, 5, and 5 reps. This was the first time I’ve ever managed six reps at 215, and I can feel myself inching closer to two plates. As long as I stick to my progressive overload plan, I’ll move up to 225 once I can consistently hit 215 for 3 sets of 6.
After the gym, I returned to the unit and drafted the syllabus for my ACE class, How to Manage Your Health in Prison, which I’ll be teaching this fall. I created a 12-lesson skeleton outline, with each lecture focused on a different health topic and several learning points under each one. It felt good to finally see the structure laid out.
At 12:30 p.m., I attended the tutor training meeting. I’m now officially certified as an ACE instructor. Tomorrow, the summer ACE session is hosting an open house for instructors to exhibit their classes and meet prospective students. Since I’m not teaching until the fall, I won’t have a booth, but I volunteered to help with the event by working the front desk. During the spring session, over 700 applications came in, so I’m expecting a chaotic day. Thankfully, I’ll just be the guy signing people in.
I also received two books in the mail today: Earning Freedom by Michael Santos and The Banker’s Code by George Antone. I started Earning Freedom this evening and read the first 50 pages. All I can say is…wow. This book is a total page-turner. I can’t imagine the rollercoaster of trafficking cocaine, getting caught, facing a life sentence, and then getting convicted on every count. And the book just started I can’t wait to dive deeper into his story.
