Report: This book is about growing your inner peace by becoming aware of your mind and the problems it causes itself. I chose this book because I’ve struggled mentally my whole life. I often go through sporadic depression and feel brought down by my thoughts. I hoped by reading this book that I would be able to transcend my negative thoughts and more easily make it through my time in prison.

I’ve learned that the mind actually causes a lot of the problems that we face day to day. It’s the minds way of attempting to control reality. The problem is we have no control over what happens. This has been made abundantly clear to me since I’ve been locked up. My ability to control anything has been completely diminished.

This book teaches ways of rewiring the mind in order to avoid unnecessary suffering. The way we perceive events in our lives is a major step. Things are not inherently bad or good. When we look at things in an optimistic way, then the world starts becoming a better place. Living like this is your last week on earth is another way to rewire your mind. In this mindset everything means more and if a gift.

This book has truly helped my mental health and my hope at my ability to make it through my incarceration. I know these tools will continue to help me in the free world as I will face more mental challenges there as well.
