Another day of no library and no Yard, so basically in the unit all day. The good news is I was able to finalize paperwork to administratively appeal my lack of medical treatment instructed by my doctor, so Monday it begins. First step is my Unit leaders have 5 days to respond. If nothing, I file another document with the Warden and he has 20 days. So June should be a clarifying month.
My buddy Derek, got his amended complaint off to District court, 200 pages typed or so. Incredible how hard it is to piece things together when the library is closed all week so no typewriter. His package had handwritten, copies from earlier filings typewritten, and emails printed and taped to the blank typing paper sheets. Shows what perseverance will accomplish!
One of the guys a couple cells down from me just finished “Shoe Dog”, Phil Knights’ autobiography, and lent it to me. I read it when it first came out, but reading it a second time I gleaned much more. His thirst for knowledge, history, and leadership study and of course persistence shines through. Clearly he is an excellent story teller, though it’s not without personal sacrifice and pain, and many stress points. Set between 1960-1980, his recollection is really impressive. Sure hope he does 1980-2000 someday.
Saturday, June 1
After an 8 am workout, day started with an 11 am visit from my daughter and her boyfriend which went till 3. Great 4 hours to catch up and spend time together! They’re moving in 2 weeks to San Diego, so they’re incredibly excited. I am as well for them as I think its a good step for them to do this together, be in a house, have yard, garage and the whole enchilada that comes with it!
Rest of the day was pretty normal. Reading Bill Maher’s new book. He is pretty smart on a lot of things, but still picks on Republicans and religion more than he thinks he does:) But if he were King for a day, he could use his common sense to at least fix 80% of our problems, even wokeism!!
Sunday, June 2
I’ve been working with Prison Professors/Mike Santos on a famous client of theirs who surrendered here Friday for 4 months to help him get oriented. For those that know crypto, he was the founder/CEO of Binance, the largest crypto firm out there. Haven’t met him yet but hope to later today or tomorrow.
Otherwise seems to be a normal Sunday with 8-9 workout,12:30-2 church, and a 6-7:30 workout. Morning workout was good(lots of wind) followed by a great church service. We have a newer Assistant Chaplain who is a much better singer and speaker than the Chaplain. Makes a big difference!
Rest of the day was spent on medical legal stuff, and then the book we’re writing. Derek is finally done with his legal for awhile, so he had time to read the first few chapters I wrote for tone and content. Good news is he loves it, so looks like we’re aligned! Hopefully next week we have some normalcy again and we can start powering on the book!
Monday, June 3
It just struck me as I wrote today’s date its my birthday, and not only that, but my 65th! Have to admit, it triggered a few emotions sitting here all by my lonesome. Can’t say how I envisioned it that’s for sure!
Worked out in the yard 6-8 tonight. Michael Santos had wanted me to meet one of his other clients who arrived 4 days ago that I mentioned, and we connected on the track with 3 of his “new” friends from their Unit. He’s only here for 4 months, lucky guy, and a good guy, we see the worlds the same, especially the US legal system:). Turns out his two friends were in Kairos with me last weekend, small world.
Tuesday, June 4
Definitely a most productive day in quite awhile. No waiting for moves or any of those issues or lockdowns. If someone saw my cell they would laugh, with all the books and stacks of papers for various projects. A sampling of stacks:
* BP 8 to get my medical treatment and relocation to camp
* 5 page draft injunction and legal filing or my attorneys to review if BP 8 doesn’t work(likely won’t)
* DOJ’s Office of Inspector General just issued a scathing report on the Sheridan facility I’m using-poor Derek that’s where he stayed. OIG states everything wrong at Sheridan , including healthcare issues, are systemic of all BOP- useful for my case!
* Cell mates legal cases for his appeal
* Derek has a folder of media/video shows he wants to do around our book highlighting success stories and drawing in volunteers
Spent 7:30-10am at library, and worked till 3. Great workout 6-7:30, maybe one of the Top 3 evenings weather wise since I’ve been here!
Wednesday, June 5
Pretty normal day. Got my legal injunction in final form for Derek to do final review. Then off to attorney’s for their final review and decision when to file. Tried giving my counselor the administrative appeal for my medical but he was pretty scarce. He normally arrives 7:30 am so I’ll be ready tomorrow!
Derek and I meet for an hour daily now to cover the book, video business ideas, his lawsuit(s), how to mail 30 influencers and so forth. Keeps us both focused. With the legal in final form,I can really focus on writing chapters now! Ended the day with a great 6-7:30 workout in beautiful weather!
Thursday, June 6
Hard to believe, but Day 3 of trying to get my appeal form BP-8 for my medical treatment appeal into my counselor’s hands. Really shouldn’t be this hard, but due to guard staff shortages, my counselor had to be a guard for a day Monday and he was not happy:) When I tried to give him the form, he asked if I’d bring to him Tuesday. Of course he wasn’t around, Wednesday same, and he took off Thursday. Just my luck…. As long as I’m, complaining, the Assistant Medical Director hasn’t gotten back to me all week on how to ship my hearing aids for repair, despite his promise on May 28th.
Derek and I met for an hour this afternoon on our book stuff. He’s had an idea for a couple years of helping felons own a small business, think lawn maintenance,barbershop,etc.. Plus then filming their journey and having a TV series on YouTube,etc.. With our book, this would be a nice next step for them. His thought for the series is Felons for Good, we might massage that:) Anyways we have been brainstorming for awhile, and I put together a strawman concept paper that we walked through as well. Stay tuned more to come!
Took a night off from working out and went to the movies for a change. Hate to jinx us, but so far this week no lockdown!
Praying for Liberty and Freedom and to see my Family and friends soon! BJ
